In what has been a rather strange day around the NFL, Dan Marino has been in the news. First, Marino was in Batavia near Buffalo to see his good friend and fellow Western Pennsylvanian Jim Kelly. Kelly is battling cancer at this point and he has a fight on his hands. Marino who was in Buffalo, was present at his charity golf tournament. It kind of put a somber moment and very human moment upon seeing the footage on the Yahoo! Sports.
Then, a small bombshell was dropped on the Dolphins fan base, as Dan Marino has added himself to the pending concussion settlement of $765 million dollars.
Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of speaking with another Hall of Fame player (who will continue to remain nameless) who told me specifically why he added himself to the lawsuit. “He said at this particular position: you suffer head trauma. I never knew I’d have side-effects, but now I’m headed to get a scan to see if I have CTE.”
Marino in a sense, is taking precautions by attaching himself to the cause previously. Said the complaint filed by Marino’s legal counsel:
“On information and belief, the Plaintiff … sustained repetitive, traumatic sub-concussive and/or concussive head impacts during NFL games and/or practices.”
One can understand why Marino would join the masses and grow concerned about what the game of football did to him physically. One should be sympathetic to the fierce and physical game these football players play.
At this point, we wish the best for Marino and hope he doesn’t have signs of CTE.
Most of all, prayers to Jim Kelly and his family as together they battle cancer. Our thoughts and prayers are with all people battling cancer.
